A Joyful Noise

Present moment, wonderful moment

Breathing in, there is only this moment…

On Friday, Walela’s breathing was effortful…

Breathing out is a wonderful moment.

The first egg in her second clutch.

If we are not fully ourselves,

Two days later, Walela’s breathing is once again labored.

truly in the present moment…

We breathe as one in this moment.

We miss everything. –Thich Nhat Hahn

I know it’s Wordless Wednesday, but…

November 3, 2010 by Melodye Shore

…I’m bursting with good news and can’t wait ’til tomorrow to share it.

*drum roll*

Phoebe’s back!  Here, Mama Hummingbird is perched atop her walnut-sized nest, showing off the eggs she laid over the weekend.

Click here for a photo album of Phoebe and her chicks-to-be. No bigger than tic tacs, they’re nestled in a bed of spider silk and fluff, not far from where I live in Orange County.

You can follow their progress via WebCam.  Also…consider adding Phoebe Allens to your list of friends on Facebook. Updates on Phoebe and her brood (with photos!) are posted almost daily.

UPDATE: I am so sorry. Had I known what would happen, I wouldn’t have posted this entry. Sometime during the night, Phoebe destroyed the eggs. *wipes away tears* No definitive word as to why this might have happened, but It’s been well over 90 degrees here in the last several days, so it’s quite possible that the eggs were no longer viable. Mother Nature is sometimes mysterious and oftentimes sad, but I choose to believe that all things work out for the best.

Anticipation…

March 10, 2010 by Melodye Shore

If you’re so over my obsession, scroll past this entry. But if you’ve been wondering about Phoebe, I’m here to report that she laid two new eggs (on February 25th and 27th). And if all goes well, Mama Hummingbird should be welcoming her new hatchlings into the world sometime this weekend (around March 13th to 16th).

Here’s a screen shot of Phoebe:

And here’s Phoebe’s brood-to-be. So cute, aren’t they? In real life, the eggs are about the size of Tic Tacs, and the nest is no bigger than a golf ball!

You can follow the hummingbird family on Facebook. Better still, check out PhoebeCam, where you can watch their progress live.
