1. Wow! Those are some impressive starred reviews!

Great interview, Melodye. This definitely looks like my kind of book. And what an original format. Getting all those permissions must have taken a lot of effort and time. Congrats, Debbie!

  2. I was intrigued just from watching the book promo…I’m going to have to get a copy for our family. I can see the kids (maybe Anna in particularly) really getting into the documentary part of the novel.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Debbie, and thanks again, Melodye, for a great visit to the author’s tent!

    • The trailer’s very well done, don’t you think? I like that they’ve featured the author as well as the storyline.

It’s a very unusual format, but it totally works. You and your kids should give it a go. 🙂

  3. Great interview! I was impressed with the design elements, too. :>)

I remember duck and cover, and hearing the air raid (emergency?) siren once in a while in Huntington Park when I was a kid. It was an eerie sound.

    • Oh, groovy icon!!! 🙂

Yes, that wailing sound was horrible. I think some towns still use them to call out the volunteer fire department…?

You went to elementary school in the Huntington Park area? Interesting. Would love to pick your braim about that! Do you, for instance, remember reciting morning prayers in the classroom, right after the Pledge of Allegiance? And having to wear dresses all the time?

      • That’s possible (about the alarm). I wonder if the tornado-warning siren sounds similar.

Yeah, I went to Miles Avenue Elementary in H.P. from 1970-77, so we girls were “liberated” by then and wore pants (luckily for me, because I hated dresses). :>) I don’t remember saying morning prayers in public school, just Catholic school later. I do remember a classmate who was a Jehovah’s Witness–her mom made her stay home whenever there was a class party, because they don’t celebrate holidays or birthdays.

        • I hated wearing dresses all the time! When the Santa Ana winds blew, they blew gravel onto (into) our bare legs. Felt like we were being sprayed with bb gun pellets! Funny, the things we remember…

          • Yeah, the negative things do tend to stand out. On the other hand, I’ve been wondering lately who used to cook the food in the cafeteria, because everything they served was so good! :>) Today’s caf food is…adequate.

    • Thanks for joining the conversation! It’s such a joy, this sharing of ideas among writers. And I’m glad for the opportunity to showcase Deborah’s “work of art,” as you so aptly said.

Would love to hear your thoughts about this novel!

      • Hey, y’all. Thanks so much for the good wishes. And Melodye, thanks ever for the great questions and for being so wonderful to work with, and of course for showcasing Countdown!

I remember those duck and cover drills, too, of course, and also praying in school, etc. — it all finds it way in Countdown. Now I am going to find my way back to book two — 1966!

        xoxoxo Debbie Wiles

        • Deborah,

My pleasure, really and truly. I loved learning more about you and your writing, and I swan, I could talk all day about COUNTDOWN! =:)

We’ll be watching for progress reports on Book Two…

  4. Can’t wait to read this one (says a blushing child of the 60’s). Interesting how this book started out as a picture book — what an evolution to its final form!

Uncanny how burnt sienna and raw umber are the two colors I’d name as Crayola favorites, too. And I also saved my $.25 allowance every week, but bought Golden Books with them.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks, both of you!

    • Oh Jama, I think you’ll love it! It’s a walk down Memory Lane, for sure, but Franny tells a beautiful story of her own.

Deborah was so gracious about answering these questions, so I’m glad you stopped by for the party. 🙂

  5. Lovely interview, Melodye. Thanks for bringing us new views of Deborah, whom if you ever get the chance to meet and hear read her own work, you simply must. There is something grounding being in her presence.

  6. You give such wonderful interviews, Melodye. The insertion of the sample chapter came at the very perfect time in the whole thing. Thank you for being attentive to your readers’ needs and rhythms.

This is definitely on my reading list. (I’ve got duck-and-cover memories of my own). Congratulations, Deborah!

    • Aw, thank you, Tracy! I love doing interviews, and it does my heart good to see you in the Authors’ Tent. 🙂

I’m glad you’ve got COUNTDOWN on your TBR pile. You will love it, I feel certain. (Drop me a note when you’ve finished, okay? I’d love to hear your reactions.)
