If you’re so over my obsession, scroll past this entry. But if you’ve been wondering about Phoebe, I’m here to report that she laid two new eggs (on February 25th and 27th). And if all goes well, Mama Hummingbird should be welcoming her new hatchlings into the world sometime this weekend (around March 13th to 16th).
Here’s a screen shot of Phoebe:
And here’s Phoebe’s brood-to-be. So cute, aren’t they? In real life, the eggs are about the size of Tic Tacs, and the nest is no bigger than a golf ball!
You can follow the hummingbird family on Facebook. Better still, check out PhoebeCam, where you can watch their progress live.

Wow, tic tacs! Those are some small eggs. And hey, I love following Phoebe!
Melodye Shore
I’m glad you do, ’cause hey, I’m all about sharing my hummingbird love.

Tic Tacs! I had no idea!
Melodye Shore
I KNOW, right? Hard to imagine, which is why it’s such a miracle to watch them up close.

I love the Paradise-like colors surrounding the nest. We don’t have DSL, so it’s impossible for me to watch the Phoebe cam. This is the next best thing. Thank you 🙂
Melodye Shore
Always happy to spread the hummingbird love. 🙂
Phoebe’s nested in a rose bush. Apparently, it’s recycled–one of four nests she built for previous broods. And if you think those colors are glorious, you should Mama Hummingbird’s shimmery feathers. [UPDATED: I posted a picture of Phoebe up top.]

Oh, how lovely! Thank you! I still think your photos would make a great calendar, or even better, a coffee-table book. So gorgeous! I would buy it 🙂
Melodye Shore
Thank *you*! I’m happy to share any and all of my photographs with you or anyone else. Just let me know which ones you want (with links to the entries or descriptions, so I know where to find them).

Go, Phoebe and Family!!!!
Melodye Shore
Hurray for our phine pheathered phriends! (It’s so nice, isn’t it, that we can bear witness to something so positive)?
tamarak
Ha! You got me with the Tic Tac, too. I will have to tell the Sauer kids this later. 🙂
Melodye Shore
It’s not too difficult to imagine, if you think about how very tiny full-grown hummingbirds really are. Someone else suggested they’re about the size of small coffee beans, but that’s not what I read on Phoebe’s FB page, and the ones we had in the nest outside my picture window were Tic Tac size, as well. Hmmm, maybe you should write a PB about them…enlighten and entertain us on the subject. 🙂

I love this! The colors and subject matter make me feel like I’m looking at pictures of fairyland. And how could I not approve of the PhoebeCam? 😉
Melodye Shore
It *is* rather like a fairyland, isn’t it? So tiny and magical…
And yep, ’tis appropriate that we enter the Land o’ Hummingbirds via Phoebecam. 🙂

I cannot get over how unbelievably SMALL yet incredibly PERFECT that nest is. Tic-tacs! I had no idea! *shakes head in amazement*
Melodye Shore
I’m in awe, as well. And to think that it’s a recycled nest…Phoebe built it up again while she was “eggnant” by adding spider silk, feathers, and plant matter. WE are privileged, I think, to see this miracle unfolding before our eyes.

This is so great — they photos are so unbelievably beautiful that I can’t believe they are real. It’s like magic and oh so awesome. This totally brightened my day!!!
Melodye Shore
There are not enough adjectives to describe the wonder…though I might like to hear what your students come up with. 🙂
Glad it shone a little sunshine on your day. xo

ah, the splendor and wonder of nature, huh?
When I lived in Tennessee, we had hummingbird feeders on our porch.
In the evenings, we’d sit there quietly and be entertained by the wee sprites, flittering and fluttering in and around and on the feeders.
Magic time!
Thanks for sharing this
Melodye Shore
Ah, that front porch experience sounds truly wonderful. I can easily imagine your being carried on tiny wings to a place far away. 🙂
On another note altogether, did you get my thank-you note for your lovely ONE WORLD, ONE HEART giveaways?
heatherp8
yes, yes, I did get it. Forgive me for not replying, but I’ve been so busy (lame excuse, I know) getting ready for a trip to Boston to celebrate the big 6-0 with my family.
I’m so pleased you liked it.
Bottom line: that’s why I do this — to make people happy!
Melodye Shore
Mission accomplished, then. I was thrilled! 🙂
Wishing you the happiest of birthdays and the most wonderful family gathering yet. xo

Awwwwwwwwwwwww… gorgeous!!! Keep us posted!!!
Melodye Shore
Will do!
LOL on the icon. I’m not sure what it means, but it certainly adds a little spice to my sugar-drizzled entry.

My icon is the symbol for the Sea Shepherds… it’s an environmental organization founded by Paul Watson (who also helped found Greenpeace)… You know how much I love and get fired up by activism and people who are willing to lay it on the line for what they believe in. The Seas Shepherds are mainly concerned with protecting the sea life from illegal hunting… like the Japanese whalers… they put themselves in the way to protect them. Animal Planet has had cameras embedded with them for a couple of seasons now and has started running a program on them.
Here’s a clip…

That picture is so adorable…it doesn’t even look real! Like, the eggs are made of candy or something.
Melodye Shore
I know, right? I’m in awe. And in love. 🙂

Such lovely photos! Was sorry to see in the more recent entry that she abandoned the nest, but as you say, it’s early and perhaps/probably she will build another.
