This plaque is a bit of a cheat, I know, but I thought you might enjoy reading a short background piece on this giant-sized sculpture. (In-depth information is available at the link below the photograph itself.)
It’s awesome! I love that, while there are similar sculptures all over the world, that this one’s looking out over the Mediterranean sea. Fun discovery!
Great metaphor, isn’t it? It’s cool to realize that, while you’d have to travel a very long distance to see this particular sculpture, he has likenesses all over the world, including some in the USA.
Thank you for sharing this picture. I should be more mindful of the art in our community – we have a piece by Plensa along our lakefront (someone else’s picture of it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tofias/5032501492/) but I didn’t realize there were similar sculptures out there (and by the Mediterranean, no less). Very cool! π
That’s one of the miraculous discoveries we make when we travel abroad: We are more alike than we are unalike. That goes for artwork, apparently, among other things.
Fun, isn’t it? π It’s playful and serious, all mixed together. Like alphabet soup, except the letters are larger. And of course, the shape’s a little different than a soup bowl.
It’s incredible, Anabel! In any language, a man of letters is awesome! I could’ve stared at it for hours, and I’m imagining I’d discover different things (words & metaphors) at every angle.
Wouldn’t it be fun to show this sculpture to people from all cultures and languages, and then to talk about the words and images it conjures up for each of them?
Aw, thanks! It’s not as if I prepared the food myself, but boy howdy, I sure enjoyed it! (I savored everything about those dining-al-fresco experiences, too!)
Wordless Wednesday…

Would you mind if I shared this photo on my blog?
I’d be honored!!! Let me know if you want the original jpg; if so, just PM me with your email address…
I love it!! I’ve never seen anything like it before. Amazing!
We stumbled upon it, very much by surprise. And wow, what a wonderful discovery! π
So cool! I’m passing this on to my daughter–she’ll love it.
Of course she will…I can easily imagine your daughter being enthralled by a man of letters. π
Amazing! I want to see that!

SO. COOL!!!!!!
It *is*, isn’t it? Like a word search in human form. π
Very cool image.

Yes it truly would!
The Question is” Where is the Q?”
Very interesting piece of art.
Great question! I’ll have to look closer at my series of pictures…I’ll let you know if/when I find it!
P.S. The artist installed a somewhat similar sculpture in Houston, TX:
