My music teacher, Stacy Pendleton, gave me a tiny treasure at our lesson last week: a hummingbird feather!
I’ve placed it next to a cherished book, for size comparison mostly, but by no means does this photo do it justice. The feather’s about an inch long, with gossamer fringe along its quill.
When I worried aloud that I might lose her special gift, Stacy suggested I keep it in a locket. I liked that idea right away. I could wear it while I’m writing–or whenever I need to bring heaven a little closer. With that in mind, my friend and I poked around the antique shops in Orange yesterday afternoon. And voilá, look what I found!
A heart-shaped locket, engraved with two hummingbirds in flight! Coincidence, serendipity…or something else? I’ll let you be the judge of that.
Here’s the silver nest into which I placed the hummingbird feather. I bent it gently, so as not to break its fragile quill.
Perhaps the previous owner polished the locket, in hopes that might help attract a buyer. Which it did. I love it, and all it represents. But I think I’ll love it even more when the design is slightly tarnished…just enough to add a little character, y’know? Still, the thing that matters most is tucked inside the heart. We’ll let that be our little secret, shall we?
absolutely perfect!
It’s a joy and a wonderment, both.
How beautiful!
Thank you! I’ll cherish it always.
What gorgeous pictures!
Gifts to us. Thank you!
Did you notice the book in the first photo? You recommended it on your blog, and I’m so glad you did. I love it!
Yes, I did a swift double take when I saw that book, thinking am I in my own house or blog? I usually have it face out like that because I love the picture, and message inside. I’m happy you love it, too!
I display mine the same way, for those very reasons.
LOVE. This is one of those “life really IS magical” moments.
Yep! I feel doubly blessed.
Oh, that is beautiful and precious. Your post made me smile. What a perfect locket! It brought back memories of the locket my husband gave me on our wedding day. Happy Thursday!
Awww, your husband must be a romantic at heart. Gotta love that!
This gift of a post is just what I needed. Beautiful locket and feather — and I love the Prevert book! Thanks so much for sharing :).
I’m glad you stopped by, Jama. Treasures like these are eversomuch more fun when shared among precious friends. That’s my belief, anyway.
There is nothing so exquisite, nothing to be more greatly treasured than the tiny joys we find in our path each day.

Yes! They are grace notes.
What lovely treasures to enrich your life.
I suspect you could write a lovely poem about them, but sadly, I cannot. This illustrated post is my way of expressing gratitude.
Fun, isn’t it? It’s oftentimes the little things that bring us the most joy.
I’m so happy the perfect locket to house your treasure came into your life! May sweet serendipity follow you wherever you go, my wonderful friend.
Multiple blessings in return, m’darlin’! xoxoxo
I love the feather and the locket
Yeah, me too!
Wow, that’s a beautiful locket! The perfect place for your tiny treasure.
Thank you! I couldn’t believe my luck! Seriously, only $19 and change? Not bad for a short afternoon’s sleuthing.
And as for the hummingbird feather, it’s a rare & wonderful treasure.
That locket is breathtaking!
Thanks! My sister said (and I agree): It was a minor miracle that I found it–or that it found me.
Did you heard what Rob Matts said about that?
No, and please forgive me, seeing as how LJ’s been having a lot of problems lately, I’m scared to go check, on the off-chance that you’re a spammer or that I’ll hit a contaminated website.
Looking Forward To Getting Involved
