Color me embarrassed: I posted a Thankful Thursday blog on Wednesday! Oh well…not a day goes by without my being grateful for something. 🙂
Overall, things are looking much brighter this year than last. I have a new grandson, almost a month old today. The roses I pruned back in early January are already leafing out, and my camellias and azaleas are in full bloom. A few weeks ago, the mockingbirds returned. They–along with the other songbirds in our neighborhood–serenade us all day long.
I joined a salon ("The Interestings)" and helped establish a new writing group. Lucky me: I'm flanked by women who are witty, bright, experienced and insightful. I appreciate the unique gifts that each person brings to the table, and am grateful for the opportunity to add my voice to theirs.
So yeah, things are looking up.
Speaking of which, I discovered these splashes of yellow in my backyard yesterday. Would've missed them altogether, had I not turned my face (my camera) toward the sun. A chubby yellow songbird, so cute he'll melt your heart. And the juiciest, sweetest grapefruit you've ever eaten.

Lovely to hear that it’s a brighter year on so many fronts! And how much fun to see your grapefruits and goldfinch, too. What a backyard you have!

Thanks, Amy. We’re basking in the sunshine, so thrilled to see those dark clouds of 2013 drifting away!
My backyard is like most people’s, I suspect, in that there areas I’m proud of, and others that are plagued with diseased, bug-ridden or otherwise compromised plants. So I focus my camera in a way that emphasizes the positive, and work like crazy behind the scenes to fix whatever it is that’s ailing the sickly bushes, trees and flowers. Gardening’s a never-ending job, but it’s gratifying in so many ways, as you no doubt know… 🙂

It’s just fine to have double portions of thankfulness!
It’s amazing to see your yard so bright and spring-filled. Here we still have several inches of snow on the ground, and icy sidewalks, and it’s definitely winter!

I’ve been thinking how much I appreciate where I live, but love that we get to take virtual trips to other places via LiveJournal and Facebook. My backyard represents for me some of the things that are most inviting to me–mind, body and spirit. It calls me “home” in a way that I haven’t yet discovered elsewhere. But I love visiting my friends’ backyards, and hearing stories about what it’s like to navigate the seasons where they are.

The goldfinch is right at home among those golden grapefruits!
I’m very happy that this year is looking better than last ♥

The goldfinches love zipping through the citrus trees, snacking at the feeder and then playing tag between the pepper and strawberry trees. They are busy little things, I’ll tell you what! 🙂

I am in awe that you can walk outside and see colorful birds like that, and fruit in your tress! It must be lovely to live where you live.

I never get tired of the sunshine, the year-round flowers and cheerful birds. But everyone harbors in their soul a personal definition of “home.” When you visit me in SoCal (ahem!), you will see/come to know it in a way that makes sense to you. 🙂
