I'm replanting my rose beds this spring because my then-gardener whacked the heck out of them pruned them back too far, and they've been sickly ever since.
I've enjoyed reconfiguring the overall arrangement–reimagining color combinations, incorporating old friends with new acquaintances, etc. (Moondance, Angel Face, Double Delight, and Lasting Love…so evocative, don't you think?) But I've also discovered a very sad side effect of the current recession is that rose bushes are in short supply this year.
Some growers went bankrupt; some distributors cut back on supplies. The net effect for home gardeners is this: Many varieties are harder to find this year–standard favorites and exotics, alike. So if you're planning to order roses online this spring, do it now. Or if you prefer buying plants from your local nursery, put yourself on their waiting lists. You're more likely to get the ones you really want, once they're available in your growing zone.

I've managed to buy most of the roses I wanted from my local nursery, and I've placed an online order for another two or three varieties that they don't carry. Crossed fingers that they don't get cancelled for any reason…it's planting season here, and I can't wait to see them in full bloom!
Not many flowers grow well around here (unsurprisingly), and the deer eat tulips…I’ll have to enjoy flowers through your garden, no? 🙂

I didn’t know about this shortage of rose bushes, though it makes sense. I do know that vegetable seed companies are booming, but that’s a whole ‘nother ball game.
Do you buy anything from the Antique Rose Emporium in Texas? I want to go visit that place soooooooo bad. I got a couple of nice old roses from them about 7 years ago.

And I do NOT have the ROSE BIBLE, but thanks for mentioning it! My Sunset ROSES book is seriously outdated, and I’ve been looking for something better. Editing to add: ROSE BIBLE is out of print, I see. New varieties aside, do you think the information/advice is timeless?

You bury the fish heads, and the compost, if finished, will smell like forest soil. Everybody wins!
Too bad it’s out of print, but I still recommend it. It features a big overview of rose families, his picks for the 50 best roses (which include your Angel Faces and Double Delights) with gorgeous pics, and stuff about rose care, which is still good advice today, esp. the 2-foot hole you dig to plant these babies.
So sorry to hear about the rose shortage, Melodye! They seem to be plentiful here in England, fortunately, and I’m hoping to pick a new one out this year, to grow with the two we saved last year.
