What do you like to do when you need a temporary retreat from the world? When I’m feeling sad or restless, or when I can’t seem to make sense of things, I like to go for a walk or spend some time in my garden. 

My mind’s still reeling about the deadly violence at Virginia Tech; but for at least a little while, I found peace in these rainbows of ranunculus. I discovered these Flower Fields in the rolling hills of Carlsbad, alongside the Pacific Ocean and just north of San Diego.

    Although sometimes, just being outside and smelling wet earth and leaves and rain can ease distress. Even bad weather is a reminder that there are larger things– and life will go on.

      • Western Oregon, about 20 miles outside of Portland. We don’t have huge fields of tulips here like they do further north, but we have a few and they’re always stunning this time of year.

          • Oh, wow, I looked at both of those schools when I first started thinking about going back, but couldn’t swing the financing–or didn’t know how to. We lived in Forest Grove the first few years we were here and only about 6 miles further in right now. It IS a small world.
