Friday Five: flight patterns

1. Saying ‘no’ last week gave me the extra umph I needed to take off in another, more important direction (to wit: number two).


2. I’ve rediscovered my writing momentum! I’m not at cruising altitude yet, but I’m feeling more free to move about the cabin. I finished writing a new chapter this week, and (mixed metaphor alert) while I still need to sandpaper the rough edges and apply a glossy topcoat, I like the overall shape.

 

3. Yesterday I astonished myself: I actually flipped somebody off! I’ve only done that once before in my life, but whoa, I let that bird fly like a pro. I was headed home from my yoga class, Om Shanti Hee still echoing in my head. (If I’m not mistaken, that’s a chant for peace. The irony, it burns.) I’m thinking I should go to yoga again today, to detach from the fact that I did it. Although…if anyone deserves the middle finger salute, Mr. Menacing Guy in the tricked-out Mercedes, YOU definitely do.   

 

4. A gallon of regular has soared to an astronomical $4.64 at our neighborhood gas station.

 

5. Like many tent evangelists of his day, my father often talked about The Rapture. (In a nutshell: Christians fly away to Glory; and there’s much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth by those who get left behind). If you’ve ever been tempted to make flight plans (just in case!), you might find this article interesting, albeit a little irreverent.

  2. LOL! Spewed tea… over #5. And, here is why. There was an Irish comedian who had a 1/2 hour show on PBS (it was a BBC show I think – in the 1970s) Dave Allen At Large. And he did a skit as a fire and brimstone preacher and when he got to the “weeping, and wailing and gnashing of teeth” – a little old toothless guy in the front row grinned. And the preacher, looking down, said… “Teeth will be provided!”

      • It’s great, isn’t it? And not far off the beaten path, either. Most traveling preachers I know were experts at working the crowds. They had quite the sense of timing (and humor!)

        Hope you’re feeling well these days. I can’t wait to hear news about your Baby to Be! (I’ll bet you can’t wait, either…)

        • oh yes, the sense of humor is what draws folks in! (Too bad they don’t exercise it with their own families!!!!!)

          I’m starting to get excited about the little one!

  5. OMG! I flipped someone off yesterday, too! I have only done that once or twice in many many years.

    And, did you know that there are several very stupid drivers all over the roads? Is it getting worse or is it just me?

    Yay on #1, 2, and 3!

    • Seems like there are a lot of entitled, irritable drivers on the road. I try to stay in my own lane and keep the peace. But it’s very scary when they use their two-ton chunks of moving parts to challenge you to a duel.

  8. Thank you for number 3 – huge smile on this face imagining that! Ugh for #4. I know what you mean – gas is $5.30/gallon here – disgusting.

      But urgh, sorry about your gas prices. It’s a travesty, isn’t it? Maybe we should let fly a flock of protest birds at the oil companies!

  9. Gas is outrageous, isn’t it? However, our prices are almost $1 lower than yours, so I’m not complaining anymore!

    Yay for #s 1&2, and tee-hee on the bird 😉 I’m sure they deserved it!

      I read an article in the NY Times about nationwide oil prices. They’re high everywhere, but disproportionately higher in states like California. It’s really eating into people’s budgets in a substantial, painful way. 🙁

    Oh wow…that is so very f-ed up!!!!!!!
    (I wonder if my oarents have already written one to me! LOL)
    When I was a child, (about 8 or 9) I was petrified of the rapture. Somehow I knew i’d be left behind, so I decided to learn how to do everything I could without technology because everything was going to fall apart as far as society was concerned. (i.e. sewing, canning, gardening, herbs and it even led to me becoming a midwife eventually)
    It’s funny how an irrational fear can lead someone to their soul purpose!

    • Something must be in the air (besides your, uh, finger. LOL I had a moment of aggravation myself today. Only I think what I did might have been even worse.

      “I’ll fly Away” is one of my favorite songs, and I’m hoping that I do.

    • I was petrified, too. And we were forced to prepare for the Tribulation in the same ways you’ve described, for those left behind if not for ourselves. On the positive side, I love that it led you to your calling as a midwife. Ah, your soul purpose…I like that a lot! xo

      • did you ever have to watch movies of what would happen during the rapture and the aftermath? ::shudders:: I had nightmares for months!

  11. LOL regarding #3…that sounds like the time I got pulled over for aggressive driving while on the way to my yoga class. 😉

      I just filled up my tank and it was $4.53 a gallon here. I go to ARCO. The other stations are charging up to $4.63!

      I need to do more yoga. I love going.

      • Do you live anywhere near Mission Viejo? I do my practice there, although they also have studios in Laguna and a few other places. I’d love to take you as my guest sometime.

    • Ha ha ha! Somehow, it sounds a little better, though, to be aggressive on the way to (rather than on the way home from) a yoga practice.

      I’m going to keep flapping my wings this week…don’t want to lose to let my progress take a nose dive!

    YOU flipped somebody off??? Oh man… that totally just skews my entire worldview. You’re like the last person I’d ever think would do something like that. Usually those types of displays are left to those of us who are a little more… evil. 🙂 But knowing you as I do, I can’t help but believe that Mr. Mercedes guy deserved not only that but so much more. 🙂

    Gas is ridiculous. Seriously.

    Your trip back east did wonders for you in more ways than one, It let your inhibitions go and … voila … you flew the bird! Good for you!

    • Thanks, Sharon. I really wanted to see you this trip…we were so close, and yet so far. It was a bucolic setting, but it was a whirwind, grueling trip. Someday soon, I just know it!

      And you’re right about the inhibitions part. It’s a great feeling, to be liberated from some of the things that have been holding me back.
