Thanks for all the mothering you do! I just got a phone call from my daughter, who I miss less today as she’ll be coming for a long weekend in a few weeks, and am enjoying sitting on the porch doing some writing, smelling cinnamon and apples for a cake I baked for Peter’s mom who will be here with more family soon. I look forward to the company, but am enjoying the quiet beforehand, too.

That statue makes me laugh out loud. I remember seeing it (albeit vaguely) when my father held a tent revival meeting in Ashland.
I wish you could’ve come with me to hear Anne Lamott. She was a joy to listen to…at once insightful and encouraging (and yes, delightfully quirky). I came away more convinced than ever: Bird by bird, we can do it, and we will!

You have no idea how much it means to hear this. Or perhaps you do…either way, I am so very grateful. I heard from both sons today, such a treat, and they chipped in on a gift card for Roger’s Gardens, a local nursery/gift shop that I absolutely adore! I love even more that they said, “Think of it as an opportunity to add something of us to your beautiful garden.” I’m getting all misty-eyed again, at the very thought. π

This Mother’s Day, and its anticipation, has been hard for me. What made me feel a bit better was buying some fresh cut tulips for our table. (The terrace tulips have died off.)
And then I remembered all the special Mother’s Days we had the priviledge of spending with my mother and with M’s.

It’s hard, isn’t it, to navigate days such as this? I thought of you when I read that line about the tulips, Barb, and I hoped that it’d make you smile as it did for me, at least a little. I almost died laughing reading Operating Instructions. Right after I had read Traveling Mercies, Bob visited with some friends in Mill Valley, CA, and came back and told me he had gone out to eat with them and a writer named Anne Lamott. I about killed him. “I love her,” I screamed.
