Mathematicians as Vampire Slayers? Who knew? Apparently, calculus is the garlic necklace around the scientific community’s collective neck.
“Proof” that vampires don’t exist? Meh, it might be bad news for some of you, but it doesn’t exactly drive a stake through this wussy-girl’s heart. However, I’ve got a lot of writer friends who make their bones writing fantasy lit, and I confess that over time, I’ve grown more curious about the worlds and characters they write about. Still, I’m skeptical. And a scaredy-cat. Yep, that just about sums it up.
One day, I might be brave enough to read a vampire story all the way through. Under a cozy blanket and with all the lights on, of course. Meantime, and for Poetry Friday, I thought it’d be fun to sink our teeth into this little Shel Silverstein piece.
MONSTERS I’VE MET
I met a ghost, but he didn’t want my head,
He only wanted to know the way to Denver.
I met a devil, but he didn’t want my soul,
He only wanted to borrow my bike awhile.
I met a vampire, but he didn’t want my blood,
He only wanted two nickels for a dime.
I keep meeting all the right people—
At all the wrong times.
Have a great weekend, everyone! May all your monsters be imaginary — and only as scary as you want them to be.

Or the *right* times, as I see it…

Oh, what a great poem!! I’ve never read that one… I’d say he’s meeting them at the right time, myself. And what did the devil want to do with his bike, I wonder?

It’s a lot of fun, isn’t it? I loved poems and stories like that when my kids were growing up. Did you ever read “There’s a Nightmare under My Bed?” It’s one of my all-time favorites!
I’m not sure about that bike-borrowing thing, but I can just imagine that devil’s up to no good! 🙂

Yes– that was a fave in our house. Love Shel Silverstein, in any form!

I love this poem and its profound sense of disappointment.
As for the proof…well, not EVERY vampire bite means you become a vampire, right? They keep some people around to feed on without turning them into full-fledged nasty creatures. They’d have to, or they’d run out of their food supply. And some vampires don’t feast on humans…
(I’m in the middle of Stephenie Meyer’s NEW MOON, the sequel to her vampire novel TWILIGHT)

I confess: I have NO CLUE about how this whole vampire/not vampire thing works. All I know is that I’m terrifed by even the remote possibility that vampire stories are true. Obviously, you’re far braver than I. 🙂

So, wonder if I’ll ever come across that ghost in Denver…
Melodye Shore
It’s definitely within the realm of possibility.
Alternatively, you could probably see that ghost if you headed toward Laguna Beach. 🙂

When I was little, my teenage sister would make me sleep in her room against my will. I knew it was Salem Lot’s fault.
I stay away from vampire books, but I love Shel Silverstein.

LOL! I tried to read that book, but I snapped it shut and shuttled it back to the library after reading just a couple of pages. *shivers*
I love Shel Silverstein, too. 🙂

I don’t read many vampire stories… I find most of them really lame, to be honest. But in all fairness, it’s because of Anne Rice. She ruined it for me. I do enjoy a good, scary story though. I enjoy Stephen King and I used to enjoy some of Koontz’s stuff.
Shel Silverstein is a god. 🙂

Shel Silverstein ROCKS!
Anne Rice, in my opinion, is a sell-out. And Stephen King, well he’s the best horror writer I’ve read, except when he, too, sells out. My favorite (and maybe because it’s a metaphor that matches the preachings I heard as a child): The Stand.

Interesting…. when do you think that King sells out? I agree though.. The Stand was great…

Monsters, schmonsters!
Melodye, if you’re ever going to sit down and read a vampire story, start with Scott Westerfeld’s PEEPS. It’s a cool new Vampire mythology that explains all prior vampire myths and how they really make sense in this real story. So cool!

What a great poem!
BTW, I recently did some vampire research and there was a ton of info on vampires and counting (who knew? not me!). Of course I read all the stuff about The Count (from Sesame Street). Did you know that they’ve made him not as scary as he used to be? blah!
