Did you see LEAP OF FAITH when it hit the big screen, way back in 1992? If so, you might understand how chuffed I am about getting close-up seats for the Broadway-bound musical at the Ahmanson.
So exciting! Still, I had a minor heart attack brief moment of panic when I caught a glimpse of the promotional materials. The tag line matches word-for-word the first line of my memoir-in-progress! I know, I know…you can’t copyright a common expression, least of all one that finds its refrain in so many religious gatherings. And though our stories overlap in some ways, they’re certainly not mirror images of one another. Still, I wouldn’t want anyone thinking I "borrowed" their tag line, any more than I’d ever float the (laughable) idea that they’d somehow snagged it from me.

Hahaha! Thanks, Stace, I needed that.
(Silly me! I get bogged down by the weirdest things…)

I haven’t seen Leap of Faith, but reading about it at the link makes me think you might like the film Ordet.
A friend of mine told me about it in college. She was so vivid in her description of it that I remembered her words (and the film title) for years, even though I hadn’t seen it. Then, finally, I did see it, and it was every bit as powerful as I thought it would be.
Melodye Shore
Wow, I hadn’t heard of it ’til now, but it sounds very moving. I do think I’d like it…a lot. Thanks for the recommendation!!!
It’s very old, so I’m wondering where & when you saw it. More to the point, I’m looking for a way to see it/get a copy for a reasonable price?
asakiyume
It was hard to get ahold of. I think I ordered a second-hand copy online–I think at the time, I got it as a VHS video (because at the time that was the sort of video player we had).
Now it seems that it’s available through Netflix, if you use that service: http://www.netflix.com/Search?oq=&v1=Ordet&search_submit=
Possibly if you put in an interlibrary loan request, your library might also be able to turn up a copy.
Melodye Shore
Great ideas! I don’t use Netflix, but maybe I could begborrowpleadwith someone who does. (Movie night, anyone? I’ll bring the popcorn and sodas!) If that doesn’t pan out, I’ll explore an interlibrary loan. Either way, I definitely want to see it!
asakiyume
It moves very slowly, but–to me, and I suspect you’d feel similarly–it doesn’t feel boring *at all*.1 The landscape is beautiful, and the people’s faces and their emotions are beautiful, and the whole thing is just tingling with the pain of doubt and the sense of the divine.
1. But since it is slow moving, you’d want to see it with people who are in the mood to look at such a thing, and when you are, too.
Melodye Shore
Gotcha! Will strive for a harmonic convergence of people and timing. =:)
(It sounds exquisite.)

I love that movie! Even if he did steal Chris Isaak’s coat.
Sorry about the tag line thing. That stuff happens so much in the writing world. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Melodye Shore
Hee! Steve Martin may have “stolen” from Chris Isaak, but if I recall my Old Testament stories correctly, Joseph was the first to own a multi-colored coat. 😉
Thanks, btw, for your reassurances! I guess it makes sense that our shared thoughts/experiences find their way into our individual writing projects. xo
