So great that you showed your granddaughter, and that she likes sea stars! When we introduce kids to things in the natural world…magic! Seems to me it’s one of the best ways to grow a child’s curiosity, and to expand their horizons. 🙂

The colors are so beautiful. The starfish, like all creation, show the handiwork of the creator!

I learned quite a bit from my Intertidal Species class last week. For instance: There are about 2,000 species of sea star living in all the world’s oceans, with striking colors that help disguise them in their natural habitats. The star-shaped, 5-armed varieties are the most common, but some species have 40 arms! Isn’t that amazing? Who knew!?!?

I was fascinated with starfish and the ocean as a child, and I remember once finding and picking up a starfish to take home. Now, looking back, I’m horrified that I killed such a beautiful creature. It certainly wasn’t my intent. By the way, the stench of a starfish out of its element is horrible!

  2. Just love these photos of starfish . I didn’t know there are so many different species They are such amazing creatures .
One time when my children were young we visited a beach in Florida and were shocked to find the beach scattered with small starfish. I picked up probably 20 of them and since they were not moving assumed they were already dead. I brought them back and placed them on newspapers to dry on the deck in the sun. Within one day the smell was so bad it would make you gag and what was worse that I had to clean it all up????
