Wicked Cool

I had to get up in the wee hours of the morning to beat the rush, but I scored two very good seats for the Pantages Theatre’s (Los Angeles) production of WICKED. Oz-some!!!! The show opens here next February, and I’ve got tickets for a mid-March performance. I’m already marking a yellow brick road through my day planner. 

I once taught an entire college course around the theme, “Journey to Oz” — a metaphor-filled, multi-media extravaganza. One of my favorite experiences was hosting author Joey Green for a discussion of his book, “THE ZEN OF OZ” (which I highly recommend, by the way). So to say that I’m a little excited about snagging these tickets…well, that’s a serious understatement.

    I LOVED the book – was one of the best I read last yaer. It was just beautifully written.
    Anyhow – I am now PEA green with envy! (just like the witch! LOL!)

  3. I’m so envious! I’ve been wanting to get tix for the LA show, but they’ve been only available to subscribers. Is it open to everyone yet? Hopefully the show will be around for a long while so I can wait and get good seats later in the year.

    I loved the book and have heard snippets from the musical. Looks fabulous!

    • It was…at least for me. LOL. I had a great time researching and playing with the metaphors. I think it’s far easier to teach around a theme — especially if you include pop-culture references.

      • I’d read the book if you like stories that give a new twist to an old story. It’s very dark and politcal. I LOVED it when I read it. Just before I went to see the show I tried to reread it and couldn’t get into it again. I am not a big rereader though.

        As for me–I love hearing the songs before hand, Hubby on the other hand likes to hear them at the show and then never again. We listen to our showtunes when he’s not home!

    • The last play I saw was Antigone. I loved the version they staged.

      Wizard of Oc — LOL! I know you mis-typed this, but I think it has possibilities, don’t you think?

    I loved WICKED on Broadway. I was able to get amazing second row seats from a woman on Craigslist. (She worked for a major financial institution that was sending her on business travel. I was in the right place at the right time. It’s still so hard to get tickets to WICKED here in NY.)

    So.. lucky you, Melodye. You are going to love the show. “Flying high..defying gravity!”

      You had terrific seats, and in NYC! WOW! Once again (as with Bruce and other adventures), you were blessed by serendipity. I’m happy for you!

      Guess I should buy the music and make myself familiar with the storyline, eh? That’s always fun!

        Sometimes the ticket karma works for me. I’m the designated TicketMaster-buyer in the family. It’s a little too much pressure for me. Would you believe I had to FIGHT for decent seats for my sister to take her daughter to see some Disney-fabricated CHEETAH GIRLS concert? What IS that? ;>

        Oh the music is delicious. The showstopper, for me, and for most, is FOR GOOD. “Popular” is fun but FOR GOOD made me cry. (I have the soundtrack and the karaoke version as well; my daughter was going to sing FOR GOOD at her bat mitzvah but changed her mind…She has a gorgeous voice but is afraid of it. Afraid to share. She sings 24/7 all about the house. Waah. I am a Stage Mother.) ;>

        The author of the novel, Gregory Maguire, came to our Kindling Words retreat last winter. I say “our” retreat even though I was not there. I heard I missed a goodie (but my younger daughter was performing in a district-wide performance of the musical, HONK and there was no way I could go to Kindling. Not that I didn’t want to but that would have been… Wicked.) {}

        You are going to love the show. Who will be your companion in the audience?
