Anna's Hummingbird at sunset, on the first night of 2014
She was guarding the nest she'd built in an aloe vera plant, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Click, click, click! I heard her warning calls, long before I saw her. But as we approached, she settled into this watchful, elegant post. How cool–how magical–is that? Call me woo-woo if you will, but I'm seeing this as a harbinger of good things to come.

Aww…she’s beautiful!

She is, isn’t she? Love the iridescent gold flecks on her wings!

Yes, I don’t think I’ve seen that coloring before. I love her regal pose, too. :>)

From what I understand, sunlight colors their already iridescent feathers. So I suppose it makes sense that the golden sunset was reflected on her wings. See also: magic. đŸ™‚

She’s beautiful. Hope she’s a harbinger of lots and lots of good things. Happy New Year!

See the gold flecks, shimmering on her wings? Let’s take them as a sign, shall we, that 2014 holds great things in store, just waiting to be mined… Happy New Year to you (to us all)!

Beautiful! And I think she is wishing you happy 2014!
Melodye Shore
It sure felt that way! I hope she brings all good things your way, too!

Happy happy New Year!
I think the hummingbird is your totem in the way the owl is mine. Of course it’s a harbinger of wonderful things for you!

Re: Happy happy New Year!
Yes, I agree! Funny, isn’t it, the way that totems choose us, instead of vice versa? I mean, I’ve always loved hummingbirds, but they’ve shown up for me a lot lately, in ways that suggest they’re delivering (positive) messages.
I will say, though, that I was crushed when I found a dead hummingbird in my flowerbed yesterday. It probably died of old age, but still. I buried it & surrounded the tny mound with flowers. I’m still wondering, this morning, if that unfortunate discovery holds any significance, or if its merely happenstance.

Is that one of your photos, Melodye? It’s great!
Melodye Shore
Yes, Peter, I took that photo at Crescent Bay Park in Laguna. Thanks for the compliment –and for helping me take my photography further than I ever dreamed possible. As you might well imagine, I was thrilled when I was finally able to capture a hummingbird at rest. This, after countless practice sessions. As an added bonus, the zoom on my new bridge camera allowed me to capture the finer detailing on her feathers. Ta da! And without a tripod, I might add!
