Hoo boy…
I was flipping through the channels this morning when I saw this preschooler, perched on the edge of the "Fox and Friends" couch. His hair was slicked back, and he was all gussied up in a starched shirt, suit and tie.
Sweet face, I thought to myself, but what’s with the outfit? That’s when my eyes settled on the chyron, scrolling across the bottom of the screen: CAN I GET AN AMEN? Pint-sized Preacher wows churchgoers.
Many questions, asked and answered.
For the record, the tiny tot seemed totally out of his element, wholly unable to answer any questions for which he hadn’t been pre-prepared. Glued to his side: his Pentecostal parents, who seemed enraptured by their "protégé."

In what seemed to me a touch of irony, Michael Jackson led them to a break: "Got me working, day and night…" he sang. Yea, verily, I said to myself. Can I get a witness?

Wow. Larissa kind of looks/sounds like that when she’s throwing a tantrum. If I could get her to toss in a few intelligible “Amen’s” and “Jesus-es”, I think I might have the tiniest female minister on my hands! GMA, here we come!!
LOL, it does sound like gibberish, doesn’t it? And all that flailing…comes of hearing the words but not fully understanding them, I think–plus, parents who place a premium on this kind of behavior.
You know, my nearly 4-year-old daughter can recite lines of “Tangled” (Rapunzel) by heart, and my 2 1/2 year old has memorized the “Bellybutton” song from Veggie Tales–because they’ve watched these videos long enough. I liken this child’s actions to their behavior, except that in my older daughter’s case, she can put the story in context and discuss it with you.
I’m 100% with you on this. Kids repeat what they hear & see, especially if that behavior’s reinforced. But with age comes wisdom and understanding–traits not evident in that clip. That little boy seemed wholly incapable of answering any questions about what he was saying–or even why he felt compelled to do it.
That’s a little bit creepy… especially the parts with the blond kid bouncing across the stage like a trained monkey. I found myself flashing back to the footage from a few years back (also creepy) of JonBenét Ramsey as a pint-size beauty queen. — PL
Wow, that’s a powerful analogy. And apt.
I’m very familiar with this sort of thing…it’s part and parcel of my own childhood. And yet (still), it makes me queasy.
It threw me back to many scenes from my own childhood, especially the story of the young boy who was born premature and almost died of a “lung virus.” The narrative behind each of these “Pint-sized Preachers” is a whole ‘nother story in itself.
I have seen some of these pint size preachers on TV before. They came across as acting out what someone had taught aka coached to say. I never did think they really knew what they were talking about much less really explain if questioned. I feel sorry for the kids. To bad they will miss out on just being a kid.
