A Joyful Noise

new year

The waning year and a magic wand

December 21, 2018 by Melodye Shore

It was an impromptu game, inspired by a piece of driftwood that was tossed on the beach by the rising tides. Using the ragged edge of the stick, I etched four numbers into the sand, as close to the water’s edge as possible. My goal? To capture images of the vanishing year before the churn washed it away.

Again and again, I played tag with the waves. running backward with my camera aimed low, until my clothes were soaked and my storage card was nearly full.

Ho Ho Ho! It wasn’t until much later, when I finally downloaded the images, that I realized I’d been etching the wrong year into the sand all along!

In recounting this story later, I wonder if this tourist might have something to say about us “crazy locals.”

But this is my story, and in this retelling, the main characters are the wonderfully creative kids from Arizona that I’d met a bit earlier in the day. When last I saw this pair, they were packing wet sand around the edges of a deep hole they’d dug—a fortress against the incoming tides.

When I headed back to my car, they flagged me down. The little girl sat back on her heels so I could admire their handiwork. They’d created for themselves a Sisyphean task, of course, but that wasn’t for me to judge.

I lavished praise on their creative efforts. “Would you like this stick?” I asked. “You never know…it might come in handy.”

By then, the little boy had returned to the job at hand: scooping and packing sand, and repositioning his body when the waves inched close enough to threaten his wall. “Nah, I’m good.”

The little girl hesitated.

I stretched the stick across my open palms—a magic wand now, drenched in seawater and sprinkled with glittery sand.  “How about you?” I asked. “You could write your wishes in the sand and then watch the waves carry them away.”

Her face brightened, lit from within by the dreams she envisioned in her mind’s eye. “Ah,” she said, “I wondered what you were doing.” She scrambled to her feet, brushed the sand off her knees, and reached for the driftwood.

Her eyes sparkled. My heart glowed.

As I headed back to my car, she strode confidently to the ocean’s edge, like a newly crowned monarch with a scepter.

I scrambled over the sand berms, and when I eventually reached the boardwalk, I glanced back at my new friends one last time. The little boy was still hard at work, frenetically digging and forever rebuilding. No time for rest or reflection. He was too busy fortifying his crumbling structure against the inevitable.

But the little girl…ahhh. She was wriggling her toes in the wet sand–a princess in her own realm, wholly immersed in the moment. Time and again, she etched her name into the sand. Time and again, she whispered her wishes into the salty air, and then invited the breezes to carry them out to sea.

Friday Five: Treasure-hunting on Balboa Island

January 6, 2012 by Melodye Shore

I'm up for a beach walk anytime, especially since we live so close. My camera and I don't do it justice, but I thought I'd post a few pictures of our trek to Balboa Island last weekend, where we ushered in the New Year.

Here, where sun-soaked, extravagant "cottages" overlook the waterfront, wealthy homeowners provide upscale accommodations for all their guests.

Even so, it's the humble, hidden treasures that most often strike my fancy. What I wouldn't give to have that glider on my front porch, rusted metal and all! It takes me back to sun-splashed days with Nana, sipping lemonade and gulping books….

Anyone know what kind of tree this is? It looks like it might be a member of the hydrangea family, but I'm pretty sure it's a non-native plant. Whatever it's called, it's gorgeous!

With so many treasures here, no wonder a pirate ship rolled in!

When I came upon this porch sign, I whispered a silent amen. These beachside walks are such treasures, more so after my sister's death. They teach me to look for grace in every moment, to breathe expansively in the now.

A theme that strikes a chord

January 1, 2008 by Melodye Shore

I like the idea of replacing New Year’s resolutions with a central theme – a mantra to help synchronize our spirits with our daily activities, an internal compass to help us find our center when the world seems to be spinning out of control. I’ve chosen a single word to set the tone for 2008: Harmony.

This year, I’m striving for a four-part harmony between what I say, what I think, what I feel and what I do. Where there’s dissonance, I’ll work for peace; when I hit a false note, I’ll ask for forgiveness and resolve to do better. Every day, I get to add fresh music to the symphony of my life. In 2008, I want to play the clear, pure notes of authenticity, courage, wisdom and grace.

The Chinese ideogram for Harmony includes two characters: the character for rice, on the left, and the character for mouth, on the right.  To have rice to eat is to be in harmony, a metaphor as beautiful as the characters themselves. I’ve added this image to my desktop as a daily reminder of my theme. I’m going to post these quotations on my filing cabinet, as well:

Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well. Mahatma Gandhi

Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen. Leonardo da Vinci

Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; from discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. Albert Einstein

The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence. Rabindranath Tagore

Grant that I may become beautiful in my soul within, and that all my external possessions may be in harmony with my inner self. Plato

Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. I Peter 3:8 (NIV)

People use music as a utensil to better themselves. Jessica Simpson (Okay, so I threw that one in to see if you were still paying attention.)

Here’s to a happy, harmonious New Year for all of us!

A Year of Magical Thinking

December 30, 2006 by Melodye Shore

I’ll be honest: I rarely keep my resolutions past mid-February. I’m not one who’s easily defeated, though, which is why I’m looking forward to a new approach in 2007. Namely, I’ll be rockin’ the new year around a theme.

I’ve co-opted the theme of last year’s Rose Parade, “It’s Magical.”  Yes, I’m serious, so please stifle that urge to laugh and roll your eyes!

I know, I know. It’ll take more than a magic wand and a liberal sprinkling of pixie dust to make my dreams for 2007 come true. I’m nothing if not practical. But this theme suits the wide-eyed, generally optimistic outlook I have about life. Also, I’m thinking it’ll help provide balance for my analytical tendencies. And corny as it seems, it’s a good reminder to whistle while I work. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

I’m partnering my creative-minded theme with a left-brained plan. I’ll call it a parade route, just to keep that metaphor rolling. I’ve written out a few fitness goals (I can easily fit back into those size-4 Sevens by late spring), and I’m ready to tackle my organization-related objectives (a decluttered office…no more wishful thinking). My highest priority is being a loving mother, wife, and friend, but selling my first book would rank among the most magical accomplishments of all.

Happy New Year’s Eve!* I wish for you a New Year that’s happy, healthy, peace-filled, and magical.

(*Pour yourself a glass of bubbly, then drop off your predictions for 2007 here.)

New Year Predictions

December 29, 2006 by Melodye Shore

Confucius said “It’s difficult to make predictions – especially about the future.” But that hasn’t stopped astrologists, swamis, and political pundits from trying. In 2006, a handful of forecasts probably came true, but for better and worse, most turned out to be false. For instance:

*A posse of celebrity psychics provided this mixed bag of predictions: After having a nervous breakdown, Katie Holmes would go home to Mom and Dad without Suri; Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would tie the knot, as would Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz; Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie would reunite, but Britney Spears and K-Fed would separate.

*Sylvia Brown (Montel William’s ubiquitous guest) said our troops would head home from Iraq this year, and the talking heads on basic cable forecasted Osama bin Laden’s capture. But the New York Times suggests Bush is considering (re)deploying another 20,000 troops in and around Baghdad, and yesterday, a White House spokesperson described Bin Laden’s capture as “a success that hasn’t occurred yet.”

*Harbingers of doom breathed a huge sigh of relief when we turned our calendar pages past 06/06/06.

*The U.S. Department of Homeland security raised and lowered their color-coded threat warnings countless times over the past twelve months, but fortunately, all of their warnings about terrorist plots were thwarted or turned out to be false alarms.

*If I squint and tilt my head just so, I can go back and discover some truth in astrologist Susan Miller’s hype; however, I didn’t sell my book in November, which is how I translated her November predictions for Scorpios in real time.

Now that the end of 2006 is just a weekend away, I thought it might be fun for us to make some projections about 2007. Try to slough off those doom-and-gloom predictions we’re hearing. Instead, let’s take a peek into our crystal balls, snap open a few fortune cookies, and shake our Magic 8 balls, shall we? I predict we’ll enjoy unarchiving this thread a year from now.
