  1. That’s so amazing, isn’t it? One day I want to go somewhere to see them hibernate, you know, those great gatherings. I’m off to E in a week and am looking forward to the peacock butterflies there. They live off the ragweed in E. There are beautiful swallowtail butterflies here in the West and they live off the milkweed. I’ll try to take some photos and post them. X

I told you about visiting their overwintering site near Santa Barbara, didn’t I? Awe-inspiring, in a wholly different way that this metamorphosis, but no less miraculous. If I haven’t posted pictures, I should…

Wish I could go with you to E, to visit my Nana’s birthplace and your old stomping grounds together. YES, please bring back lots of pictures. Can’t wait to see the Peacock Butterflies (among other things)…they sound utterly magical.

  2. I have no words!! Okay. I do. Your photos are so clear. Totally amazing. Did you save/keep the empty chrysalis? It’s clear – transparent. How did that happen? The caterpillar skin is also strange and fascinating. You have done a wonderful job, Melodye! XO

The chrysalis still hangs from the fuchsia, a gossamer thing that twists gently in the afternoon breeze. I think I’ll let it stay there, to help keep the magic close. I suspect it’d probably deteriorate more quickly, if I tried to bring it indoors.

I don’t know how that works, exactly. But the chrystaline skin is amazing.

Thanks for watching this all unfold with me, Margaret. I’m often short of the just-right word for these circumstances, too. xoxo

  3. Such a fascinating transformation, the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis to bright-winged beauty. Thank you for sharing this up-close opportunity to study one of nature’s miracles, the birth of a butterfly. xo

  4. I’m not sure which is prettier- your words, your photographs, or the transformation itself! I missed some of these stages on FB. Thanks for sharing the monarch’s journey here. I am reminded of Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
